Staycation Ideas in Tampa Bay

September 27, 2016 By Chris

Did you miss out on a summer vacation or are just looking to make the most of a three day weekend? As a Tampa Bay resident you’re in luck. The area was voted one of the best staycation towns (Tampa #3 and St. Petersburg #9) in the country by AAA in 2016. A staycation is the perfect mix of economy and immediate enjoyment since there is little travel involved and a hotel stay is optional in most cases. There’s something for everyone in the area including spas, amusement parks, golfing, and museums. We’ve rounded up our favorites for you.

Spa Staycation

Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club is located in Palm Harbor, a short drive north from Tampa and St. Petersburg. It features not only a world class golf course but it’s also famous for it’s Salamander Spa. The spa offers an array of services including a variety of massages, skin treatments, and hair and makeup. Their staff also encourage visitors to practice mindfulness before and after each treatment.

Family Staycation

Busch Gardens amusement park is no hidden secret in the area but why not make it a full weekend instead of a quick day trip? There are numerous hotels of varying price points around the park. The park changes throughout the year including Fright Fest for Halloween and Christmas Town in December. You can get a discount on tickets through the City PASS program and military visitors can receive free one day tickets. The park also offers special vacation packages that include dining and hotel options.

Waterpark Staycation

You live in a beach town so it’s safe to assume you enjoy some part of the water. Whether you like the beach or a swimming pool, Tradewinds Resort has you covered. Located in St. Petersburg, it’s waterpark is unique in that it includes several attractions on the beach. In addition to the pools, slides, and other water activities, it also has ten restaurants, a kids club, and planned entertainment events throughout the day. Florida residents receive discounts on their stay and the resort features several different vacation packages.

Tourist Staycation

Sometimes it’s fun to put on your tourist hat and enjoy the kitschy and the traps. The Tarpon Springs Sponge Dock is a throwback to the vacation destinations of the 60’s and 70’s. The Spongeorama museum holds on to it’s retro feel but it also provides information on the natural sponge industry that built up this area. The area is also famous of it’s Greek influences including delicious restaurants and culture. There are also cruises, fishing excursions, and wildlife trips running from the dock daily.

It’s not difficult to see why Tampa Bay was found as one of the best staycation spots in the country. There are plenty of things to do in our backyard. Disconnect from the world for a weekend and take full advantage!

Protect Your Home While on Vacation

May 24, 2016 By Chris Leave a Comment

Memorial Day is less than a week away and the sizzling summer’s heat and humidity is closely lurking here on the west coast of Florida. If you’re like many of us, you’re planning a vacation, a much-needed break from the norm complete with a full-body and mind attitude adjustment.

Once you’ve set your budget, destination, time away and how to get there and back, take some time to protect what you’re leaving behind. Sure, vacation will be sensational, and you probably won’t want to come home. Yet, eventually you will, and you’re going to want to find your house and belongings intact or in at least the same condition as when you left. Anything less can really kill the great vacation buzz you’ll still be floating on.

Take time to protect your home and all the things in it that you hold dear. Whether you’ll be gone for a week or a month, the most important thing you can do while you’re gone is to make your house look lived in and active.

Protect Your Home While on Vacation

Consider taking care of some of the following to tighten your security and protect your home while on vacation:

  1. Schedule improvements. Vacation is a great time to have work, especially exterior work, done on your house, and the constant activity is a bonus. If you’re designing a new patio, maybe installing a pool, even redoing your landscape and irrigation plan, schedule it for while you’re away. It’s so much easier to come home to completed work, and not be under foot while everything is topsy-turvy. Plus, the activity discourages the bad guys.
  2. Exterior lights on motion sensors. Most people have at least one or two exterior lights around their homes. Motion sensors to turn lights on when someone, or thing, comes too close for comfort are likely to discourage intruders and are simple to install.
  3. Interior timers. These are great because you can place them throughout the house to turn lights on and off at specific times during the day and night. The only drawback is that if a savvy thief watches your house for a day or two, the schedule becomes obvious. If you have someone checking on the house, say, two or three times each week (make sure you trust this certain someone), ask them to move the timers around so there’s no clear pattern. Or, now available are apps for Smart Phones and tablets that you can use to turn lights on remotely, or even create a changing lighting schedule for the time you’re gone.
  4. Trusted friends. Ask a trusted friend or nearby family member to periodically check on your home while you’re on vacation. Their activity will deter anyone nefarious. A friend can also take in your mail and any deliveries you may receive.
  5. Hold your mail. Cascading mail out of your mailbox can be an “I’m out of town and the house is ripe for a rip-off” tip-off. If you don’t have a friend to help manage your house while you’re away, the easiest solution is to have your mail held. Check with the USPS to see how long they will hold mail. You can do the same with any newspapers you may receive. Be sure to have the publication credit your account for the copies you don’t receive.
  6. Security Systems. Security systems can be as simple or as complex as you liked; some systems even let you watch a live feed of your home from your cell phone. Having one installed can have multiple benefits including peace of mind on vacation and a discount on your home owner’s insurance.
  7. Say “no” to Facebook and Twitter. As much as you may want to tell the masses about all the fascinating events of your life, don’t broadcast to the world that your home will be empty or you may come home to a, well, empty home. Avoid “checking-in”, posting your travel dates and time, and upload photos once you return from vacation
  8. Hire a sitter. A house sitter is someone who will live in your home while you’re on vacation. Obviously, you’ll want to be extremely selective when it comes to turning your keys, your house and your belongings over to someone else, so take every precaution before making this decision. Whomever you choose to live in your house, be very clear about how you expect your home to be treated while you’re away and what responsibilities they are to handle (pet care, lawn maintenance, etc.). It’s best to lock up anything of high or irreplaceable value.

Above all, once you’ve buttoned up your home, start your vacation knowing you’ve done all you can to keep your home and belongings safe – so go have a great, memorable time. Summer is just around the corner!

Prepare Your Home For Vacation

May 26, 2015 By Chris

Summer is almost here and for many Americans, it’s prime time for vacation. vacation should be a relaxing, stress-free time not one spent worrying about your home. Follow our tips to prepare your home for vacation and one you’re at your destination sit back and relax.

Keep up appearances.

Make it appear as if someone is frequenting the house at different hours of the day. Stop mail and newspaper deliveries for the duration of your trip and set timers on your lights to go on and off. Mow the grass and clean up the yard; if you’ll be gone for longer than a week consider having someone maintain the grass for you. Park your car in the garage, if possible, to deter thieves or damage. Ask a trusted neighbor to stop in your home once or twice during your time away to check on things, pick up any packages that may be delivered by overnight carrier, and make sure doors and windows are still locked.

Prepare your home.

Before leaving, unplug all appliances that won’t be in use during your trip. Set your thermostat to a temperature that will reduce the use of air conditioning. Most hot water heaters have a setting for vacation or non-regular use. Turn off the water valves directly under sinks, the dishwasher, and washing machine. If you have a pool, check the water levels before you leave and treat as necessary. Make sure your filter runs at least 8 hours a day while you’re gone; for this a filter time is an inexpensive investment. Clean out your refrigerator of any food that many spoil while you’re gone and take all trash out before you leave to prevent unpleasant smells from developing or attracting pests.

Prepare Your Home For Vacation

Notify someone.

Let a trust neighbor or a nearby relative know of your vacation plans and an alternate way to contact you in case of an emergency. Notify your home security system company of your plans as well of anyone who has been given access to your home in your absence. Some local police departments will have a patrol officer drive by your home during your vacation to make sure things don’t look out of place, others will simply take note of your contact information in case there is an emergency while you’re gone.

A few small but proactive steps will go a long way to ensure you have an enjoyable summer vacation.
